Inspired by Jeremiah
Oh my eyes are a fountain of tears,
When I hear of God's love for His people,
How they exchanged, their great and glorious God,
For the idols He had long ago forbidden.
When He cries, " Was I not a husband to you?"
I remember the devotion of your youth,
How we rejoiced together in the desert,
And I promised you never ending blessings.
"I thought you would call me Father,"
But you forget me for days without number,
Oh that my head were a spring of water,
Return to me Zion, precious daughter.
I am the God of everlasting kindness,
I wanted you to boast in my blessings,
I taught you the ways of the righteous,
But you chose the gods of other nations.
You trade the God of all wisdom,
For a scarecrow, in a cucumber field,
This bitter root, like poison grows within you,
Be afraid, even the heavens are appalled.
Remember the covenants of old,
Do not be carried away by such lies,
False prophets deceive when they speak of peace,
Only God can give rest to your souls.
Oh to have the passion, of the prophet Jeremiah,
Your word burning in his heart, intensely like a fire,
Lamenting, and pouring his heart out like water,
Weeping and longing for their righteous Saviour.
God wanted to call you His children,
His own beautiful olive branch,
A fruitful tree, sending it's roots by the streams,
Blessing other nations with your confidence in Him.
But you forget Him every day, the long rejection,
For this unfaithful nation, God waited generations,
Watching, as they chose anything but Him,
But for the apple of Your eye, Your love goes deeper still.
You Lord are the God of reconciliation,
At the appointed time you will bring back this nation,
Can the heavens be searched or the earth be measured?
God will never forget the child he has treasured.
Again there will be joy, weddings and dancing,
God has called you with His love everlasting,
With His loving compassion as sure as the dawn,
A new king from David's line will be born.
